How It Started

Disdero Lumber has been part of the Western lumber industry since 1953. From the very beginning, we have always focused on one thing above all else: Quality. Disdero Lumber was founded by Al Disdero, who grew up around the mills and lumberyards of Oregon. His introduction to lumber came from long days stacking boards, pulling orders, and delivering material to job sites. That early experience instilled a deep respect for both the product and the people who use it.

Before starting his own company, Al worked in mill operations and sales, where he developed a strong appreciation for high-quality lumber and careful manufacturing. When he returned to Portland, he noticed that much of the market was driven by availability and price rather than quality. He believed builders and architects deserved better information and better materials.

In 1953, he opened Disdero Lumber Company in a small building in southeast Portland to offer premium finish lumber and specialty products selected with intention. His belief was simple. When quality is prioritized, materials perform better, last longer, and deliver greater value.

 

Built on Careful Selection

From the earliest days of the company, we have been known for our attention to material quality. Al personally traveled to mills throughout the Pacific Northwest, inspecting lumber and selecting only the best available stock. That approach shaped the company’s reputation and remains central to how products are evaluated today.

Over time, the company built one of the largest inventories of clear lumber and specialty wood products in the Western United States. This depth of inventory allows us to support a wide range of project needs while maintaining consistent grading and appearance standards.

Carrying the Standard Forward

In 2002, nearly five decades after founding the company, we moved to our Clackamas distribution facility. Shortly after the move, Al visited the new location to ensure it reflected the standards he had set from the beginning. Satisfied with what he saw, he offered a simple assessment: good work.

Al passed away later that year, but his influence remains deeply embedded in the company. The principles he believed in, quality materials, fair pricing, and dependable service, continue to guide us today.
